From the castle, the Royal Mile runs downhill past Castlehill, the Lawnmarket, the High Street and the Canongate. The street is almost exactly one mile long, and the palace is at the bottom. The Scottish Parliament stands on the Canongate, on the way down. Count on a slow walk with stops along the way.
Waverley, between the Old Town and the New Town, is the nearest station to the palace. From the station you reach the Royal Mile and follow it to its lower end, where the palace stands.
The tram goes from the airport to St Andrew Square in about 35 minutes, with a tram about every 7 minutes in the daytime. From there it is a short walk to Waverley, and then down the Royal Mile. Buy your tram ticket before you board.
The Airlink 100 bus takes about half an hour to Waverley Bridge.
Waverley has one fast train an hour from London King's Cross and two trains an hour from Glasgow Queen Street.
The rooms of Mary, Queen of Scots have no wheelchair access. For the other rooms, ask at the entrance.
About a mile, along the Royal Mile: the castle is at the top and the palace at the bottom.
Take the tram to St Andrew Square, about 35 minutes, walk to Waverley station and follow the Royal Mile down to the Canongate.
